ACTIVITIES OFFICE

It's February and that means playoff time!!

The girls hockey team received the #1 seed in Section 8A and is competing for a section title! The girls finished the year 19-5-1 and held the #1 ranking in Class A all year! They are stacked with seniors this year with goaltender Payton Rolli leading the way. The future Gopher will try to get her team back into the state tournament and back in the championship game!

The boys hockey team has been ranked in the top 5 all year in Class A. They are currently #4 in Class A and will start playoffs during the 3rd week of February. This is another team dominated by 10 seniors with Ryan Shaugabay leading the way for the Warriors. However, juniors in Gavin Andersen and goaltender Finn Hanson have made huge contributions! Look for the Warriors to be the #1 seed in Section 8A.

The boys basketball team is currently 12-8 and have 3 weeks left in their season. Freshmen Doot Boucha and Junior Brady Fast continue to turn heads as they rack up the points every night! They are in the middle of the pack of Section 8AA and look to make a run late.

The girls basketball team has two wins on the year, but they are competing in every game. Sophomore Atlee Larson and Junior Olivia Tessier are leading the way. The girls start three sophomores and two juniors. They will start playoffs at the end of February.

The Robotics Team (T.E.A.M. FRED) is off and running! They are building their robot and looking to compete in mid March. There are over 40 students participating on FRED this year and look to go back to Nationals (Houston) and make a top 5 finish at the Minnesota State Tournament in May.

The speech team started practicing this month and will start competing at the end of February. Look for Junior Silviea Olverly and her piece. She missed the state tournament by a couple of points last year!

The band and choir will have their Large Group contest on February 25th in Roseau. As always, band director Mr. Eastvold and choir director Nancy Fisher, will send several students to this contest.

Lastly, we’ve just wrapped up the final week of the regular season for Esports and will begin divisional play in the third week of February. Several of our teams are currently in position to qualify for the State Tournament in St. Cloud, March 13–15.

Teams and players with strong qualification potential at this point include:

• Super Smash Bros: Joe Booth (currently ranked in the top 15% statewide)
• Minecraft: Draven Bernard, Addison Waldron, Nick Sero, and Joe Booth (only one loss all season and currently 2nd place in the North Division)
• Valorant: Rocco Painter, Hunter Larson, Joe Booth, Owen Erickson, and Henry Baker (only one loss all season and currently 2nd place in the North Division)
• Fortnite: Joe Booth and Hunter Larson (ranked in the top 10% statewide)
• Mario Kart: Draven Bernard and Addison Waldron (currently in a four-way tie for 2nd place)

Hoping for a strong showing at the State Tournament!

February is a busy month for Warriors sports and activities!! Let's GO!!!

NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

We Lean and Grow Together

The WPS Native American Education Program and Warroad Folk School were proud to come together as a team to honor Native American culture! keeping traditions alive by learning and sharing, and to ensure these stories and teachings continue for generations to come!

It was an amazing two-day workshop, held at RiverPlace on the evening of January 13 and 14, with delicious snacks each evening provided by " The Hawk catering services".

Heartfelt thank you to our amazing instructors, Ms. Kathy Napper and Mr. Jackson Harren.

The Native American Education Program proudly shares Indigenous Foods & Games at Warroad Public School !

For three incredible days, January 27, 28, and 29, Warroad students from Pre-K through 12th grade immersed themselves in traditional teachings, hands-on learning, and engaging in cultural learning.

From cooking and traditional medicine teachings to fun, creative Indigenous-based activities, there was something for everyone! Students participated in Baaga’adowaan (the traditional wood-stick net game, also known as lacrosse), the dreamcatcher game, a 52-person popsicle push-up, Indigenous-led sports writing, and cooking their own delicious meals, including bison Three Sisters soup, Manoomin (wild rice) porridge, and cranberry biscuits.

A heartfelt Miigwech (thank you) to Dr. Dan Ninham and Mrs. Susan Ninham for generously sharing their cultural knowledge, wisdom, and teachings with our students and staff!

SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Happy February!

With the winter season settling in and the days lengthening, our focus at Warroad Schools turns to celebrating the unique strengths and differing perspectives that every student brings to our halls. In the Special Education Department, we recognize February as the month of inclusion. Celebrating North American Inclusion Month can remind us that inclusion isn't just a seat in a classroom but a sense of belonging.

Unified Champion events in January included rollerskating and basketball. Rollerskating took place in the elementary gym on select days throughout the month. On January 29th, the Warroad Unified Partners participated in a Unified Basketball game in Roseau. This game was an inaugural event that we hope will continue into the future. Ten Special Olympians and Eighteen Unified Partners competed in front of students and families. It was definitely a time to remember!

Warroad Unified Champion Schools  are proud to champion our Special Olympics and Unified programs, creating a space where every student belongs and grows. Get ready to make a splash! Unified swimming kicks off in March!

We also invite you to save the date for Yeti Fest on Saturday, March 14, 2026. This event is hosted by All-In Warroad, and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication to our students. All funds raised by All-In Warroad during Yeti Fest go directly toward the purchase of adaptive and unified playground equipment, ensuring our school play areas are truly accessible to everyone. A huge thank you to All-In Warroad for their leadership and commitment to an inclusive community!

The commitment to inclusion we see in our community is a daily reality in our classrooms. We are happy to share that our students are currently smashing their milestones, mastering new skills, and tackling their IEP goals with grit. As we charge into the second half of the year, we invite you to keep that momentum going at home. By celebrating the "small" victories and keeping steady routines, you help bridge the gap between classroom progress and lifelong success.

Our students’ success is a direct reflection of the hard work put in by our WPS special education teachers and paraprofessionals. Your ability to adapt lessons, advocate for your students, and solve problems daily is what makes this progress possible. We know the work is demanding and the hours are long. Thank you for your commitment to our students and families. We truly value having you on our team!

Reminders to families of WPS' Students:

Warroad Public Schools’ Transportation Department offers before and after school busing for students.  If your family chooses to transport students, you are reminded of drop off and pick up lane procedures.  Drop off and pick up points are the Early Learners’ Center entrance and Warroad High School entrance.  The Elementary School Office entrance is not a beginning of school day drop off or end of day pick up point.  Please wait in your vehicles for students to be released by the school at the pick up points.

Parents are important partners in education.  Please contact teachers directly via Schoology, email, or phone to share information and/or request meeting times.

All visitors including student family members must check in at school offices when coming into the building during school hours.  Thank you!

🌟WPS' Time to Shine🌟

Congratulations to Warroad Public School’s own Native American Education Program Home/School Liaison, Mrs. Shawna Grapentine!

Her stunning artwork, Land of 10,000 Rinks, was showcased at the 2026 World Juniors in Minneapolis. The piece beautifully highlights the deep cultural significance and enduring connection between Native American culture and the sport of hockey in Minnesota. It was also printed and awarded during each player of the game presentation(s).

What a beautiful way to represent Warroad. We are proud to celebrate Mrs. Grapentine’s talent, creativity, and meaningful contribution to this international event!

❤️🤍💙🥇Warrior Buddies connected this morning to learn more about Warroad's own Olympian, Brock Nelson, and to make Team USA posters to decorate our halls as we continue to celebrate the Olympic spirit this month!

Brita Comstock & Kelsey Didrikson proudly represented Warroad Elementary at the Minnesota Elementary Principals Conference in Bloomington, where they presented the school’s Warrior Way PBIS model. Their session showcased how they have embedded Morning Meeting into the elementary master schedule, equipped teachers with curriculum that intentionally builds classroom relationships, and integrated PBIS celebrations and activities that have positively transformed student behavior while strengthening a fun, connected, and supportive school culture. Being selected to present was a tremendous honor, as only about half of the proposed sessions were accepted—an accomplishment that speaks volumes about the impactful work happening at Warroad Elementary. 🌟

From the Angle School to here in Warroad we had so much fun celebrating the💯th day of school. High school and elementary kids each had the chance to find 100 hidden pictures of the principal, various 100 themed crafts and activities filled the day, and our teachers and staff made 100 good news calls to students' families celebrating all the good things happening at WPS! 🌟
